Talk Is Cheap

Talk is cheap and its easy to shout
If we spent all our time working things out
Would it change anything?
Words are cheap and anyone can sing
So let’s sing a song about all the wrongs
Complaining and straining
This is where it belongs
Or so some one said
It must’ve been something I read
But while I was reading
The ethics lay bleeding

Stab the back of the hand that feeds you
We fall apart in the ‘basic human nature’ excuse
It’s the heart of the gig that bleeds
From the endless soul self-abuse
Tied to the bar in the hope of reviews
From the obvious to the obtuse
The critics who sound so profound
About the mythical ‘new underground’

But talk is cheap
The words of wisdom put you to sleep
And you don’t even read the cuttings you keep
Just following trends
The trail never ends
When all the solutions are just round the bend
You’re upholding ideas that you’d never defend
In the endless search you cannot comprehend
That there’s nothing that wonderful
In worshipping trivial
Ego material
Cos music sells papers
Who sell you the feeling
As if it was missing

Yeah really, talk is cheap
Till you put it in print
Sing as you read
The words all fit
Now we’re learning the words
Obscure or absurd
It makes no difference
It never gets heard
No it never gets ‘in’
But you really want to win
When there’s nothing to be
You say ‘look at me!’
And it works! Yes it works!
Cos talk is cheap
But shouting is free!

Mediocre Minds

look around the country, an abundance you’ll find
of mediocre minds
sift through the fodder as sane justice declines
because of mediocre minds
shrouded under cover, the most flamboyant guise
hides a mediocre mind
you got yours but you can never bend mine
with your mediocre minds

when they cry foul you had better watch out
because you never know which aptitude they’re griping about
don’t act too smart for their stenoscopic ways
you’ll be discarded away

reason’s not to be what the privileged define
with their mediocre minds
so many sighted people are so helplessly blind
from their mediocre minds

if you want attention then you’ll be asked to bend
but the surest insurrection is enlightenment
then you can live outside inharmoniously
without friends and enemy

they wanna keep me locked away
cuz I’ve an overactive brain

leaders, presidents and the nightly news guys
cater to mediocre minds
reason’s not to be what the privileged define
with their mediocre minds
you got yours but you can never bend mine
with your mediocre minds
the only natural thing that I really despise
are the mediocre minds
mediocre minds!

Change isn’t progress unless it feels better
And waiting for better just makes it feel worse
So we blow all the bubbles of hope and excitement
And try to calm down before they all burst
Too used to asking for things we deserve
Clean water in taps or somewhere to live
And failing to see that merely by asking
We’re setting the limit on what people give

I don’t want your promises
I don’t want your change
Whats the chance of being heard?
I won’t ask you again

Asking for change is like asking for freedom
to choose who supplies all you need to be free
We take the position of moral consumers
only to find there’s no guarantee
Action’s a magnet for those who quit asking
But couldn’t find anyone else they could tell
Action – it’s not only making the protest,
But making that overdue phone call as well

The leaders we look at keep talking of change
like it was our fault things are all going wrong
Look a bit wider and get the whole picture
Then turn off the nerve that says “here you belong”
The people who change things are dead when it’s normal
And lucky to stay out of jail when it’s not
You can ask for the world to stop kicking your soul in
Or stand up and fight for the fighting to stop

We don’t need your promises
We don’t need your change
If this is all you have to give
We won’t ask you again

Change Of Ideas

Well the sheaves have all been brought, but the fields have washed away,
And the palaces now stand where the coffins all were laid,
And the times we see ahead, we must glaze with rozy hues,
For what don’t wish to admit what it is we have to lose.
Millenia in coming, the modern age is here.
It sanctifies the future, yet renders us with fear.
So many theories, so many prophecies,
What we do need is a change of ideas.
When we are scared we can hide in our reveries but
What we need is a change of ideas.
Change of ideas, change of ideas,
What we need now is a change of ideas.

Why are you frightened – can’t you see that it’s you
That ain’t no ghost – it’s a reflection of you
Why do you turn away – an’ keep it out of sight

Oh – don’t live up to your given roles
There’s more inside you that you won’t show

But you keep it hidden just like everyone
You’re scared to show you care – it’ll make you vulnerable
So you wear that ghost around you for disguise

But there’s no need just ‘cos it’s all we’ve known
There’s more inside you that you haven’t shown

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

One day you’ll walk right out of this life
And then you’ll wonder why you didn’t try

To spread some loving all around
Old fashioned causes like that still stand
Gotta rid this prejudice that ties you down

How do you feel at the end of the day
Just like you’ve waked over your own grave

So why are you frightened – can’t you see that it’s you
At the moment there’s nothing – so there’s nothing to lose
Lift up your lonely heart and walk right on through
